I wasn’t really sure what to expect about this show being in such a small venue. But overall, it was a pretty good show sans the dismal opening act.
I really don’t know who it was that opened since they didn’t announce it nor was it on the bill. Whoever it was, they picked good songs to spin, but the way they would fade into other songs and the little annoying add-in sound effects with mega echo everytime just didn’t do it for me.
Finally after a couple of hours of my ears bleeding from echos, Amon Tobin came on. His set was awesome.. there were a couple of high points for me– once he was using 1-2 notes of the Survivor “Eye of the Tiger” in his mix, and later on he used the music from “Momma’s Gonna Knock You Out” with the lyrics from the song “Shook Ones” by Mobb Deep.. it was great! Mobb Deep is one of my favorite hip-hop groups which haven’t really gotten the popularity of others. Though the aforementioned song was on the 8-Mile soundtrack.
The reason Amon Tobins’ performance was really great was because he didn’t bring all of his synth gear to just play the same thing you could hear by picking up his albums– he just brought some turntables and mixed his music into, for the most part, an interesting journey.
Apparently he has some sort of remixes album getting ready to drop, so I’d imagine a lot of this stuff will be on it. At least that’s what I’m hoping.
Being that there were maybe 200 people at the show last night, I’m sure no one visiting this site really knows who he is. That said, you can read more about him here if you’re interested.
