Yesterday after taking Audrey to the dog park provided by the HOA where I live, I had a pretty bad experience. While we were in there, she saw someone walking outside the park, and managed to actually jump over the fence and escape! As soon as she hopped the fence, she sprinted and was out of my sight with in seconds. Totally not cool. I found her after about 10 minutes or so, but it took me another 15 to catch her.
Greyhounds are sight hounds– if they see something moving, even from a long distance away, they will chase it. When they are chasing something, they are in a “zone” and are pretty much unaware of their surrounding, pain, and other external stimuli. Once they are done chasing something the realize they are completely lost and freak out– not to mention they sprint at up to 45 MPH. That said, they ALWAYS need to be on a leash unless they are in a fenced in area. The interesting thing is that Audrey isn’t like most Greyhounds.. apparently she can jump, she also barks when she wants to play or when she sees the cat, and we’ve taught her to play fetch!
I was talking to a co-worker last night about that and he recommended a dog park near me. I also found a list of Denver metro area dog parks, a site about a study to create off-leash dog parks in Denver (it looks like the first one is opening very soon), and a list of dog friendly businesses in Denver.
