Following Jake’s lead, I decided to compare what I own against Amazon’s best of 2004. I also looked-up the Best of 2003 since I figured I probably have more of last year’s music than this years. Here is how I compare:
1. Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand. #4. This is a great disc.. I find myself listening to it pretty often.
2. Snow Patrol: Final Straw. #5. I’ve actually heard this played on KBCO since I bought the album. It lies somewhere between contemporary and Indie rock, and it’s definitely a solid album.
3. Interpol: Antics. #6. I’m not sure why, but this album has only grown on me in the past couple of weeks. I LOVED their first album, and this one has been in my regular rotation lately as well.
4. Bjork: Medulla. #13. Honestly I haven’t listened to it that much. As such, it hasn’t really grabbed me yet.
5. Madvillian: Madvilliany. #18. Another one I’ve not listened to that much, but MF Doom puts out some great stuff. I’m sure once I get caught-up on the rest of the music in the queue, I’ll love this one too.
6. Mos Def: New Danger. #25. This one I go back and forth on. I wasn’t really prepared for what was on this disc, but I did gain an appreciation for it after seeing him live.
7. Killers: Hot Fuss. #26. I grabbed this from Jake, and it’s pretty damn good. I’ve only listened to it a couple of times now, though.
8. PJ Harvey: Uh Huh Her: #27 This is another one I haven’t listened to that much. Some of these albums you just have to be in the right mood for I guess. Her To Bring You My Love album was one of the best albums of the 90’s that you probably haven’t listened to.
9. Beastie Boys: To The 5 Boroughs. #32 I initially dug the old school big beat sound, but it wasn’t enough to grab my attention for that long. Maybe I’ll give it a spin again sometime.
10. The Streets: A Grand Don’t Come For Free. #48 In a lot of ways, except for the final track which has “play me on the radio” written all over it, this album is much like their first. The MC’s are great, the lyrics are pretty good, but the production of about 1/2 the songs makes you want to skip to the next track. They SO need some better sounding beats.
11. Beta Band: Heroes to Zeros. #54. It’s no wonder Jack Black plugged these guys so much on Hi Fidelity. It’s been awhile since they’ve put out a new album, but as always, they do not disappoint.
12: Thievery Corporation: Outernational Sound. #59. I just picked this up a couple of weeks ago, and it’s amazing. I’m still kicking myself for not going to see them at The Gothic a couple of years back.
13. Hives: Tyrannosaurus Hives. #73. Another disc I got from Jake– I dig it.
14. Von Bondies: Pawn Shoppe Heart. #76. I picked-up both of their albums at the same time, and honestly it’s been long enough since I’ve listened to either of them, I don’t remember which is which. They are both good, however.
15. The Libertines: The Libertines. #84. This is one of the Indie groups I haven’t really been able to get into, but maybe I’ll give this album another shot.
16. William Shatner: Has Been. #87. Yes, another CD that I got from Jake. I’ve only spun it a couple of times, but it’s very interesting to say the least. The spoken word thing reminds me a lot of Johnny Cash– but perhaps it’s just his voice. I realize this is an album I’d probably like to have on the iPod.
I’ll have to do a breakdown of the 2003 list soon; I have around 20 of those albums as well.
