Old School Shaving Supplies

21Sep05

Tired of paying $500 a month for razor blades? Yearn for the craftsmanship of old school razors? It would be a good time to take a look around Classic Shaving. And no, I don’t currently use them or get paid for pointing them out.

I got tired of donating half my salary to Gillette about a year and a half ago and started using a Braun electric shaver. It does okay I guess, but it’s certainly obvious I only get out the blade for special occasions. I’m a bit curious to try out one of the old school safety razors, but the initial setup fee is certainly steep…

Straight razors are well worth the investment. I bought one for Himself back in 2001 and he liked shaving with it so much he convinced a few of our friends to try straight razors themselves.

As for an old-school safety razor, does owning the fancy set matter? Vermont Country Store carries a Merkur double edge safety razor on its own for $34.95 (item #27599) plus shipping.

Yeah, I’m not sure if I’d want to start with a straight razor or not– maybe I’d be more comfortable with it after doing some reading about it. Granted the lovely ladies with tattoo sleeves at Floyd’s always straight edge the neck beard when I get a haircut, but doing it myself is a whole different ball game.

The site I posted also has the individual safety razors for around the same price, but the whole set is certainly tempting (I’m all about doing the manscaping the proper way).
