Sometimes I’ll pick-up music that I think I would like without listening to it first, then as it turns-out I’m not that much into it. Years later I’ll pick it up again and realize how great it is. For instance, I really didn’t get much into the “conscious movement” type hip-hop (ie.. the Native Tongues collective) until circa 2001 even though I had quite a bit of it from when it was popular.
Lately I think the best example of this is Death Cab For Cutie. A friend recommended it to me when Transatlanticism came-out, so I’ve had their stuff for a couple of years at this point, but only recently have been getting into it. Remembering how much I liked Ben Gibbard’s side project, The Postal Service, I decided to give it a spin again recently and was pleasantly surprised. I’m really not sure why I didn’t get into it, considering I was also listening to Martin Grech at the time. Oh well, at least I now understand what the buzz has been about.
