Dance Revolution

I like to challenge myself to do things that I would normally never do every now and then (and 99.9999% of most computer geeks would never do period) just to expand my boundaries a bit, keep things fresh, embarass myself to stay used to humility, push myself to try things that I know I’m naturally not good at, and try to keep myself from becoming too predictable. Most of the time they are very small things such as approaching that totally-out-of-my-league stranger to strike up a conversation and sometimes (though rarely) they are major things like trying out motorcycle racing.

I recently did one of these little things, and that was taking a Big Band Ballroom dancing class with a friend at Colorado Free University. Sure, I’ve somewhat attempted going “clubbing” a few times when I was younger and much more svelte, but I’m being pretty generous to describe myself here as having the moves and grace of The Rock of Gibraltar.

That aside, I had a great time and I guess I have a general idea of how to Swing, Tango, Foxtrot, and Waltz now. The classes go by very quickly and I found it hard to memorize and get a feel for the steps in the time alotted ( 3 weekly 2 hour classes). Luckily you have the option of retaking the class for only $8 which is what I’ve opted to do for the next three weeks. There were actually quite a few instructors there, most of which seemed to just be there on their own time just because they enjoyed dancing (I’m not sure that they really make much of anything off of the class given the student to instructor ratio, cost of the class, etc.)

I did enjoy the class enough to be interested in taking some of the other dance classes offered through CFU, and I think the Salsa class will probably be the next on my list. I think I’d also like to take a class that focuses on Swing since it seems to be fairly prelevant. I don’t really ever intend to be all that serious about it or anything, mostly I just enjoy learning new things and will hope to get confident enough about it to actually enjoy functions which include any sort of formal dancing instead of watching the clock.
