03Jan07

My dad sent me some photos of the aftermath of the snow in Walsh, the town where I grew-up. Crazyness.

    Brandon,
Did a ggogle search for info on the recent snowstorm. Found your blog and checked it out. I graduated Walsh in 1980. I live in a small town outside Dallas called Little Elm. I appreciate the posting of the pictures your dad sent. What is his name? I may know him. We lived 12 miles east of Walsh. Dad lost his farm to auction about 7 or 8 years ago. They now live in Granby, Mo. Would be nice to have place for people like myself to go and get info like this and to keep up on what’s going on in the old digs.
    thanks

    Hey Paul,

I graduated in 1997 and my dad in 1967, so you may or may not know me or my family, but my dad is Larry. Actually I remember some Jones’ that lived east of Walsh. When I was pretty young, a girl named Jinda Jones was in my class but then she moved to Johnson, KS. Perhaps she’s your niece? I think she left my class sometime maybe in First Grade or so.. that would have been somewhere around 1986 I think.

I can’t say I’m much in the loop about what goes on in Walsh these days, I just thought I’d post a couple of tidbits about it since I felt like the local media wasn’t covering it very well. I’ve not lived there in 10 years or so and currently live in the Denver area.

Didn’t know your dad personally but heard the name, didn’t he work at the bank? Yes that was my neice, I think she lives in Colorado Springs now. I haven’t been back in about 10 years myself but hope to make it up there in 2008 for the Alumni banquet. I agree that the media has not reported this as agressively as they should be. Can’t say I’m not surprised. I have heard more on the cattle issue than about the human issue. I’ve got you bookmarked and will check back now again.
    thanks

Yep, my dad worked at the bank back then. I’ll probably mostly just try to keep-up with disaster funding and what not, so don’t be surprised if I don’t mention Walsh too often again. :)
I’ll probably be heading to the 2008 banquet as well, being that it’s the first banquet after my 10 year anniversary and all. I think the last time I went was 1998.

Paul, Little Elm is just up the road from me! I’m in Far North Dallas, better described as “just north of Addison Airport”.

B, those pictures remind me of the blizzard of 2003! We got six feet of snow in Evergreen and a handful of roof collapses in town. The late December 2006 storms left about five feet up there, but it was more manageable than the crazy snow drifts out on the plains. I got to clomp around my parents’ roof in snowshoes pushing the snow off with a shovel, which was much more fun than it sounds.

Yeah, that blizzard was pretty fun. For some strange reason this one really seemed to be a lot worse (at least the one that hit Denver) even though it was less snow. Many possibilities why (close to Christmas, didn’t start melting right away, etc), but it seemed much worse. For instance, two days after the storm I wanted to get out of the house and wanted to run a quick errand that wouldn’t normally take more than 20-30 minutes, but it took me 2 hours because of the crazy traffic. A lot of the main roads were down to 1 lane, and people were out being all crazy about getting their xmas shopping done I guess.

From talking to my dad everyone in SE Colorado was about as prepared you can be for a storm like that (had food, fed much more than usual to the cattle before the storm got there, etc), but there’s not much you can do if you can’t even get out of your house!
