Apparently it&#8217;s been around for awhile but very recently switched formats? I&#8217;d say about 50% of the songs I&#8217;ve never heard before. It seems like an indie version of <a href="http://www.kbco.com/main.html">KBCO</a>&#8230; a bit of everything such as folk, bluegrass, blues, alternative, rockabilly, etc. Check it out if you&#8217;d like something different and aren&#8217;t too cool to listen to such content. <img src='http://blog.bharper.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> It&#8217;s not something I listen to all the time, but I&#8217;m all about the diversity.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sometimes I&#8217;ll pick-up music that I think I would like without listening to it first, then as it turns-out I&#8217;m not that much into it. Years later I&#8217;ll pick it up again and realize how great it is. For instance, I really didn&#8217;t get much into the &#8220;conscious movement&#8221; type hip-hop (ie.. the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Tongues_Posse">Native Tongues</a> collective) until circa 2001 even though I had quite a bit of it from when it was popular.</p>
<p>Lately I think the best example of this is <a href="http://www.deathcabforcutie.com/">Death Cab For Cutie</a>. A friend recommended it to me when <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=devnulled-20%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26creative=165953%26path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%253fASIN=B0000D1FDI%2526tag=devnulled-20%2526lcode=xm2%2526cID=2025%2526ccmID=165953%2526location=/o/ASIN/B0000D1FDI%25253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82" title="View product details at Amazon">Transatlanticism</a> came-out, so I&#8217;ve had their stuff for a couple of years at this point, but only recently have been getting into it. Remembering how much I liked <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Gibbard">Ben Gibbard&#8217;s</a> side project, <a href="http://www.subpop.com/bands/postalservice/">The Postal Service</a>, I decided to give it a spin again recently and was pleasantly surprised. I&#8217;m really not sure why I didn&#8217;t get into it, considering I was also listening to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Grech">Martin Grech</a> at the time. Oh well, at least I now understand what the buzz has been about.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I spent Friday evening in <a href="http://www.downtowndenver.com/housing/fivepoints.htm">5 Points</a> at the <a href="http://www.cervantesmasterpiece.com/">Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom</a> to see <a href="http://www.stylusmagazine.com/review.php?ID=2384">Ill Bill,</a> Cage, <a href="http://www.rhymesayers.com/aDetail.php?aId=8&#038;cT=Bio">Brother Ali</a>, &#038; Face Candy (featuring <a href="http://www.rhymesayers.com/aDetail.php?aId=9&#038;cT=Bio">Eyedea</a>). This is kind of an interesting line-up since it combines a couple of up and coming, well, thuggish artists (though I suppose Ill Bill is already established through <a href="http://www.nonphixion.com">Non-Phixion</a>), with a couple of artists from <a href="http://rhymesayers.com">Rhymesayers</a> demoing new ideas and material.</p>
<p>The concept of Face Candy is really great&#8211; Eyedea (of Eyedea and Abilities), with a bass guitarist and a jazz drummer. It&#8217;s really hard to describe, but something to the effect of Eyedea going freestyle with a flow similar to <a href="http://www.dirtyloop.com/Doseone.html">Doseone</a>, with minimalst folk/jazz music to accompany him. <a href="http://www.jtbates.org/">JT Bates</a> was an AMAZING drummer.. I have never seen someone rock a small set like that (it was just a snare, bass, 3 cymbals, and a hi-hat) and get so much sound out of a simple set. I really love any sort of hip-hop combined with live instruments, and honestly they were the unexpected highlight of the night for me. </p>
<p>I think since it&#8217;s a side project for Eyedea as they don&#8217;t have any material out at all, but here&#8217;s hoping they&#8217;ll put something out (a live album would be especially great). The crowd which came to the show was really sort of bizarre to me, but then again I&#8217;m sure most of them were there to see Ill Bill. At first they reacted fairly pooly to Face Candy, but as they played on you could kind of see the crowd getting into it (you have to understand they had a vastly different sound than anything else that night), but by the end of their set they recieved a lot of applause and respect.</p>
<p>Cage followed them and put on a pretty decent show. I&#8217;m just barely familliar with his material and it&#8217;s honestly not my style, but it was pretty good. </p>
<p>Brother Ali came on next who puts on a great show&#8211; I was very impressed with him when I saw him precede Atmosphere a couple of years back. He&#8217;s currently working on a new album with Ant, and he had to of been playing some of that material which all seemed very promising. I liked his performance better the first time I saw him, but he still did a great job.</p>
<p>Ill Bill came on to close up the show, and it was fine I suppose. I just think there are many other artists which I&#8217;d rather see live as neither Ill Bill or Cage are really the type of stuff I&#8217;m into (which probably explains all of the sideways hat wearing thugs at the show). I liked their production, but generally speaking I don&#8217;t think their rhymes were anything to get excited about both in ingenuity and content.</p>
<p>Next on deck for me is a two day concert blow-out; <a href="http://www.rhymesayers.com/aDetail.php?aId=3&#038;cT=Bio">Atmosphere</a>, <a href="http://www.rapreviews.com/archive/2005_03_1988.html">Blueprint</a>, and POS on November 10th, and <a href="http://www.mosdefmusic.com/">Mos Def</a>, <a href="http://www.talibkweli.com/">Talib Kweli</a>, <a href="http://www.jean-grae.com/">Jean Grae</a>, and Pharaoh Monch on November 11th. I&#8217;m really excited about both of these shows, especially if Mos and Talib perform any of their groundbreaking <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=devnulled-20%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26creative=165953%26path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%253fASIN=B000067CLT%2526tag=devnulled-20%2526lcode=xm2%2526cID=2025%2526ccmID=165953%2526location=/o/ASIN/B000067CLT%25253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82" title="View product details at Amazon">Black Star</a> material together!</p>

I think one of the things which caught me off-guard is how much better the production quality is on this album compared to the ones in the past. I guess Ant must of finally made enough money to buy some decent equipment (last I read, he was still living in his mom&#8217;s basement and working a night job). The percussion sounds a lot better, there isn&#8217;t background hiss, etc. It seems that Ant also went for a fairly 80&#8242;s hip-hop sound as well which always makes me happy.</p>
<p>&#8220;<a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=devnulled-20%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26creative=165953%26path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%253fASIN=B0000BWVOL%2526tag=devnulled-20%2526lcode=xm2%2526cID=2025%2526ccmID=165953%2526location=/o/ASIN/B0000BWVOL%25253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82" title="View product details at Amazon">Seven&#8217;s Travels</a>&#8221; didn&#8217;t do much for me, but I guess I&#8217;d always thought of it as sort of a filler album while Slug and Ant worked on something else (much like the Felt albums) for whatever reason. I&#8217;ll need to listen to this album more, but at this point I&#8217;m about as enthused with it as when I first got acquainted with &#8220;<a href="<a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=devnulled-20%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26creative=165953%26path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%253fASIN=B000067ULR%2526tag=devnulled-20%2526lcode=xm2%2526cID=2025%2526ccmID=165953%2526location=/o/ASIN/B000067ULR%25253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82" title="View product details at Amazon">God Loves Ugly</a>&#8220;. Basically it&#8217;s good to hear Slug get back to his typical self-hating and reflection rather than talking about what it&#8217;s like being on tour, ha.</p>
<p>I was curious about some lyrics in a song talking about a murder at one of his concerts, I googled it and <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9518247/">came across this article</a>. It&#8217;s a good overview if you&#8217;re not familliar with them at all.</p>
<p>Oh, and I have heard Colorado get at least one reference in one of his songs, but there might be more. Slug is a big fan of this place, and he always mentions at his concerts here how we bring out the biggest crowd on his tour (which is interesting when artists like <a href="http://www.theroots.com/">The Roots</a> are opening for bands like <a href="http://www.galacticfunk.com/">Galactic</a> here.. argh). He actually had a song about sitting around a bar at DIA between connecting flights on the last album called &#8220;Denvemolorado&#8221;.</p>
<p>Atmosphere <a href="http://www.fillmoreauditorium.com/artist_detail.asp?event_id=214060">will be at The Fillmore on Nov 10th</a>, which reminds me that I need to get tickets&#8230;</p>
